The $25 Million Video Call That Changed Everything
In February 2024, a multinational company's Hong Kong office received a request to initiate a $25 million wire transfer. An employee was skeptical. The company arranged a video conference with the apparent CFO and several executives to authorize the transfer.
Every person on that call was a deepfake. The faces were AI-generated to look exactly like the real executives. The voices were cloned. The employee transferred the money. None of the real executives had any knowledge of the call.
If a professional employee at a multinational company can be deceived by a full deepfake video conference, a grandparent receiving a phone call with a cloned grandchild's voice faces an attack that is equally — arguably more — convincing. Video calls are no longer identity proof.
